With a colorization, levels are extremely important. If you're not experienced with levels, this might be slightly confusing, but once you know your way around, this step only takes a couple seconds. It's not required to do any of this, but it will definitely help out your final product. The uneven tones will be taken care of in the levels. Use the clone brush to get rid of defects, and in some cases the healing brush can be used to add texture to blown out areas. Dust, scratches, and uneven tones all need to go before you start working on it. The first thing you should do with any image is clean it up. Colorizing is time consuming, so it really hurts when you lose a lot of work. It also doesn't require any pre-selection of colors or blending of colors into one another, though both are excellent methods.ĭon't forget to save early and often. It also incorporates the layer mask right into the adjustment layer, so you can clean up your selection edges as you go along. The nice thing about this method is the nature of adjustment layers themselves, you can always go back and change them, messing around with the colors as much as you want until it finally looks right. The original I used above was around 2000 x 2000 pixels. Take particular care to avoid images with large blown out white sections, as these will never look right in the final image. The cleaner and better resolution the original source, the easier it will be to work with and the better it will end up. The paper gives muted blacks with even colour reproduction, and excellent detail.The key to a good result is in a good clean source image. When printing in B&W as opposed to colour, you must not do the profile conversion by going to edit > convert to profile. The file is in Adobe RGB 1998, which is the correct profile to use and we have soft proofed and adjusted accordingly for contrast and brightness. That’s how easy it is to prepare your file for printing in B&W at theprintspace. In this example we are going to add a little more contrast to the file by increasing the blacks and lifting the mid-tones and highlights slightly. ![]() Now is your chance to make any adjustments to the file based on what you have seen from the soft proof. However, if you look at the bottom of the image window, the file is still in the profile Adobe RGB 1998 but we have soft proofed for contrast and brightness using the image profile. Once you are happy, select OK and notice at the top of the image window the soft proof for the image profile is loaded correctly.Remember: each paper will affect your image file in different ways based on the paper’s characteristics. ![]() It is good to see what areas in the images have been impacted by paper choice so we can address them in editing before printing. Now if you move the pop up box to the right slightly and check the Preview on and off, you will see how the image is affected by the chosen paper type.
